My friend @onsaas from Twitter put this article on our radar. It's a simple no-nonsense look at one of the biggest sticking points of Cloud Computing: security. This article addresses software as a services (SaaS) and the security issues surrounding it. SaaS is one segment of Cloud Computing. Note the mention of SAS 70 data center certification. SAS 70 certification helps customers know that their data center and SaaS providers have appropriate controls in place and that they follow those controls.
One of the greatest hurdles firms vocalize to implementing software as a service is concerns around security. I had the opportunity to talk to a few SaaS providers regarding security concerns and would like to share what I learned from these providers.
Security is a broad term that can be broken down into three areas: data center, application and user. Each area has its own security best practices schema. Any area ignored represents a security vulnerability to the firm and its data. The best SaaS providers in the market discuss each of these areas with their customers, demonstrating how their SaaS solution is as secure, and frequently more secure, than what an internal IT department can provide to the firm. A bold statement, I know, but read on and you will learn why Web 2.0 software implementations are more secure than on-premise solutions.
